While kidney cancer is relatively uncommon, 25-30% of patients with kidney cancer will have metastatic disease at the time that the kidney cancer is diagnosed. Identifying that metastasis of kidney cancer is usually accomplished by radiologic tests such as CT scan or MRI in combination with blood tests. Often, if metastatic kidney cancer is suspected from these tests, a biopsy of the area of kidney cancer metastasis is performed to confirm the diagnosis.
